Episode 10

As he replaced the film in his pocket, the door opened and he was faced by a man; early forties, five day stubble, beer belly of a darts player and a surprised expression. "Who the 'ell are you" Yaxley!shouted Yaxley. Shocked, the other man turned to go "Sorry I'll go" he stammered. Yaxley wasn't standing for that. "Hang on a minute. You can't just walk off like that. This is my room. What thee 'ell are you doing !" Yaxley's Yorkshire accent became far more pronounced when he was angry and he thought of Hummer Thompson's excited ramblings down at Split Feather Farm.  "Err..Errr...Worthington. Brian Worthington" said the man and held out a hand after wiping it on his trousers. "I come into this room to watch the telly. I haven't got one you see. Don't watch the telly so I've never felt the need to get one". Yaxley considered this statement. "You don't watch television but you use my room to watch it". Worthington nodded " Yeah. I like Quincey and Columbo in the afternoons and The News on BBC One at nine o'clock and that's all. Ooh, and the football" he added as an afterthought. "So", replied Farcett "You watch the T.V every afternoon, every evening and whenever there's a football match on, but it's not worth buying a set". Worthington nodded, "Hardly seems worth it, really". Yaxley Farcett Columboleaned back in the chair and laughed. The characters he had met so far in Barnham; Jak, Clunch, Hummer, Su and now this Worthington fellow had all seemed a mite bizarre on first meeting, but somehow he couldn't help but like them. "Come in" he said "I think Columbo is about to come on. Let's watch it together and you can tell me all about this damn place I've been shipwrecked on".
Yaxley Farcett and Brian 'Bunter' Worthington were sitting side by side on Yaxley's 'new' settee enjoying a twenty two year old episode of 'Columbo'. During the course of the programme, Brian kept digging Yaxley in the ribs and telling him of things that were about to happen. He even told him how the murderer had actually carried out the 'unsolvable' crime ten minutes before the end. 'For someone who doesn't watch television, you're a bit of an expert' commented Yaxley. Brian grinned and crumbs fell out of his mouth.

He had got through a whole hobbies!packet of chocolate hob nobs since the last advert break. 'Tectives are my favourite' he said. 'Watch 'em all I do. Aways get it right. Never known to get one wrong. Mind you, 'The Sweeney' were a bit difficult because they dint always have a criminal. Sometimes it were just about that Jack Regan. He were a hard 'ol bugger weren't he ? I was ever so pleased when he got promoted to Inspector Morse'. Yaxley smiled. Brian was turning out to be an amiable companion. A big, fat, stubbly and slightly smelly companion but good fun to be with all the same.
